Manila's Cemetery Where People Live and Work Among the Graves

Manila's Cemetery Where People Live and Work Among the Graves
During Qingming Festival in the Philippines, this dispatch heads to a Manila cemetery unlike anything covered so far on this channel — a place built less like a graveyard and more like a small, dense city of the dead. The graves here are multi-level structures rather than single plots, and some are even fitted with air conditioning — a detail that reframes what a grave can look like when living space is scarce and the dead are given the same care as any resident. What makes the place stranger still is the people: workers who spend much of their lives inside the cemetery itself, tending to it as a daily job rather than a once-a-year visit. Their presence turns the space from somewhere people pass through into somewhere people actually live and work. It's a companion piece to the temple dispatch filmed the same Qingming season — where that stop was about remembrance through photographs and incense, this one is about the physical, everyday reality of a cemetery built to be inhabited, not just visited.
